Upper Deck's Flagship NHL Set Is Back — and It Hits Hard

If there's one hockey box that never goes out of style, it's Upper Deck Hockey Series 1. The 2022-23 edition drops the first 250 cards of the base set — 198 veteran cards, 49 Young Guns rookie cards, and three checklists — and wraps it all in 24 packs of eight cards each. That's a lot of cardboard, and a lot of chances to pull something special.

Young Guns — The Rookies Everyone's Chasing

Six Young Guns per box, on average. That alone sells it. Young Guns are the most iconic rookie cards in the hobby — clean design, hobby-prestige pedigree, and a track record of producing some of the most valuable cards on the market year after year. On top of the base Young Guns, hunt for the hobby-exclusive Clear Cut Parallel, the High Gloss (#'d to 10), and the Exclusives (#'d to 100). New Inserts for 2022-23

Upper Deck loaded this release with fresh insert sets that give collectors plenty of new targets:

• Defence Mechanism — new for this year, spotlighting the league's elite blueliners
• Centre of Attention — celebrating the best pivot men in the game, with Gold parallels to chase
• Freestyles — a colorful, eye-catching inter-series set featuring star veterans, with Gold versions that are extremely short-printed
• Attacking Zone — a three-sided die-cut acetate insert featuring star centers and wings. Yes, die-cut acetate. It looks incredible.
• Population Count — a 30-card set with seven different print runs ranging from 1,000 copies all the way down to a one-of-one. The low-number versions will be everywhere on the want lists.

The Classics Are Back Too

UD Canvas returns with its signature artistic style covering the top stars and Young Guns — four per box on average. UD Portraits brings a bold new design with star and short-printed superstar versions, including Black & White parallels numbered to 99 and 25 respectively. Honor Roll and Dazzlers round out the hits, with Rainbow and Gold Rainbow parallels of Honor Roll and both Blue and Pink Dazzlers to collect.
